…the residential settlement ‘Hannibal’ in the Asemwald district of Stuttgart was built between 1968 and 1972 and consists of three (3 is the magic number) residential blocks with a height of up to 70 meters and 23 floors (no comment on this number). With its own shopping area (and a bakery with incredible high prices for drinks) from service and trade, an autonomous residential city for a planned 3000 inhabitants (today 1,800 inhabitants due to the increased housing requirements) was built on the Filderhochfläche with a total of 1143 apartments.
Originally (according to Corbusier’s model of “Wohnmaschine”) a single complex was planned, which however was not approved due to its dimension considered incompatible.
Contrary to numerous negative examples for the housing construction of the 1960s and 1970s Asemwald has developed into a coveted place of residence, which has a very high living quality.
So people there seems quite relaxed and are easily involved in a short but informative conversation. Walking araund and enjoying this special place in Stuttgart may take around two ore three ours and it is easily reachable with the public transportation. Architectural Sightseeing.
